International Day of Women and Girls in Science on 11th February

International Women and Girls in Science Day is February 11th. Why is this day important to you? Use #womeninSTEM and #WomenInScience to let the world know!

un.org

Science and gender equality are both vital for the achievement of the internationally agreed development goals, including the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Over the past 15 years, the global community has made a lot of effort in inspiring and engaging women and girls in science. Unfortunately, women and girls continued to be excluded from participating fully in science. According to a study conducted in 14 countries, the probability for female students of graduating with a Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree and Doctor’s degree in science-related field are 18%, 8% and 2% respectively, while the percentages of male students are 37%, 18% and 6%.

In order to achieve full and equal access to and participation in science for women and girls, and further achieve gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls, the United Nations General Assembly adopted resolution A/RES/70/212 declaring 11 February as the International Day of Women and Girls in Science.

FJS 2017: Call for Applications International “Spring Symposium” of the young chemist network in Ger

We were able to finish the review process for the first fellowships awards of the International Younger Chemist Network.

We are very happy and satisfied to inform you about the winners:

  • Oboto WoIdara

  • Naira Buzzo Anhesine

  • Xuyen Nguyen

  • Onyema Chukwuebuka Thanksgod

  • Maxim Trubyanov

  • Kseniia Otvagina

Congratulations, our winners has been awarded with a fellowship to be a participant at the “Spring Symposium” 2017 of the Young Chemist Network in Germany.

This annual international conference is located in Mainz at the Johannes Gutenberg University this year (March, 28th - April, 1st 2017). As mentioned in the call of applications, we will cover flights to Germany, accommodations and the conference fee.

Additionally there will be a program with valuable experience in the field of young international researchers, for example industries visits and social activities. This will allow you to expand your network and experience the values of the IYCN – communicate, collaborate, educate and mentor.

What are your next steps:

IYCN will also provide to the winners a personal mentor, who will help to guide your way to Germany and provide you with additional information.

Sincerely,

IYCN

IYCN is starting to collaborate with IUPAC

As a group of likeminded young scientists we are truly aware of the globalization of chemistry within our societies. While many countries were represented in Boston and Sevilla, we know there is so much more of the world that needed representation. And that leads us to today, planning for the official launch of IYCN at the 46th IUPAC World Chemistry Congress in São Paulo, Brazil.

During this congress, IYCN will collaborate with local organizers, as well as societies around the world to host two major symposia that discuss issues of great importance to rising stars in chemistry: Green Chemistry practices and Intellectual Property rights. Along with this, we will organize a networking coffee session highlighting many countries in attendance to show the true breadth of the ways in which IYCN can unite early career chemists. At this congress IYCN will not only come together for the first official time with IUPAC members but we will also elect our first board that will continue to work towards our collaborative, international efforts.

IYCN presence at 6th EuCheMS Chemistry Congress

IYCN had the opportunity to gather at the 6th EuCheMS Chemistry Congress (ECC) in Sevilla (Spain). During the 6th ECC, IYCN hosted a soft launch event in collaboration with the participants of the YCCB Exchange Program previously mentioned. Due to the many countries present in Sevilla, IYCN had the opportunity to lay the groundwork that will eventually be used to build an expansive international network. Also IYCN has some representation during some receptions during ECC, like ACS resection, Wiley reception, EYCN reception.
